Will Elsa Be The First Lesbian Disney Princess?

If you’re a fan of Disney you know that most Princesses always end up with a Prince. Princes come in all shapes and forms, whether it’s an ogre in Shrek, a beast in Beauty and the Beast or a frog in Princess and the Frog. In the end it’s always a happy heteronormative couple. Apart from Brave. In Brave, Merida ended up alone, because she’s a free spirit and she wasn’t ready to get married, she wanted to find herself and create her own destiny instead of following a tradition that’s a couple of centuries old. That was unusual and awesome, wasn’t it? An idea that a girl might be interested in pursuing something other than married in her life.

Well, the internet thinks it’s time to take things even further. How come in this day an age, when gay marriage is becoming more popular and more socially acceptable, we still don’t have a gay princess?

A lot of people in the LGBTQ community related to Elsa from Frozen. They saw her coming to terms with her powers and accepting herself as a metaphor for coming out. It was Alexis Isabel Moncada who first tweeted “I hope Disney makes Elsa a lesbian princess imagine how iconic that would be” and then essentially started a campaign on Twitter by tweeting @Disney with a #GiveELsaAGirlfriend”.

After that the internet pretty much went wild, and her tweet was retweeted more than 2000 times, it also got 3,5 thousand likes and the hashtag was trending on Twitter. Not only that, but people started tweeting their own reasons for why they think it’s a great idea with a #GiveElsaAGirlfriend. The story was picked up by People Magazine, Teen Vogue, Celebuzz, Huffington Post, Us Weekly and even CNN.

Alexis Isabel Moncada was also interviewed by MTV explaining why she created #GiveElsaAGirlfriend and how she wants young girls to understand that a princess can love another princess.
