Unexpectedly Gay Actors Who Got Famous Playing Straight Characters

These famous folks in the entertainment industry sure are impressive with their entertaining skills – seeing as they role-played for the other team for so long on the silver screen! These gay stars may have come out with a bang or a little more quietly, but on the screen, they’ve definitely fooled us with their ultra-hetero roles.

1. Neil Patrick Harris
Ah, Neil Patrick Harris and his family with David Burtka – all of our relationship goals. He played the womanizer Barney Stinson on “How I Met Your Mother”, and plays a straight role amazingly, charming every lady watching. And of course he played the iconic teen genius Doogie Houser (but he is also a genius IRL, just so you know). Probably the most famous modern instance of a gay actor playing a straight role is Harris’s portrayal of the womanizing Barney Stinson on “How I Met Your Mother.”

2. Sarah Paulson
Paulson has recently been in the spotlight for dating a female celeb decades older thanher (to hell with the ageists, they’re a lovely couple!) She’s played straight roles on “American Horror Story”, “American Crime Story”, and “12 Years A Slave”. She dated actress Cherry Jones for a couple of years in 2007.

3. Matt Bomer
The super sexy Matt Bomer (Neil on “White Collar”, and drool-worthy piece in Magic Mike XXL) has actually been married to a man since 2011, and raised three kids together. That handsome and a family man, with a stripper alter ego? Jackpot.

4. Jonathan Bennett
Every woman’s inner teenager girl is weeping right now. Every closeted high school boy is probably weeping with joy, though. Aaron Samuels, the iconic high school crush who starred in “Mean Girls” is actually very into guys – sorry ladies.

5. Jim Parsons
The adorable Sheldon on “Big Bang Theory” has actually been with partner Patrick Healy since 2002, and in an interview was asked about his role on the AIDs movie “The Normal Heart”, as a gay man. While some may have felt awkward in the position, Parsons took the question as a gift, calling it “wonderful”, and responded that yes, it did carry meaning for him.

6. Ellen Page
Now that Ellen Page has finally come out, she looks so much more relaxed and carefree. She is famous for a few straight roles, such as playing a pregnant teenager in “Juno”, and a roller-derby star in “Whip It”. When a pastor left a homophobic note with her on a plane, she awesomely tweeted: “2 da Pastor who wrote me-Being gay isn’t a belief. My soul isn’t struggling & I don’t want arms of Heavenly Father around me. A girls arms? Yes.” She doesn’t want to play straight roles anymore, either. Yas, qwueen!

7. Raven Symone
Only very recently has Raven started acknowledging herself a gay woman (even though she was dating one of the most stunning women to star on ANTM). Her famous straight roles include Olivia on the “Cosby Show”, and the main character in “That’s so Raven”. In 2013, commenting on gay marriage, she applauded the legalization by just saying “now she could get married.” Ok then.

8. Ian McKellen
This famous actor has starred in everything from “X-Men” to “Lord of the Rings”, and we bet not once did it cross your mind that he was gay. He came out on an episode of “Anderson”, the talk show, but never really hid his sexuality.

9. Queen Latifah
This gorgeous diva’s sexuality was treated like a secret, but she’s actually been seen out in public PDA-ing with her girlfriend. She doesn’t like to chat about it in public, but it’s definitely not a secret.

10. Cynthia Nixon
Cynthia Nixon is famous for the role of Miranda Hobbes on “Sex and the City” – where she carried on many torrid affairs with dudes. (*Ahem, Steve Brady*). But in real life, Nixon married her partner Christine Marinoni, in 2012.
