Even though Emmy Rossum has become a beloved actress for her role in shows like Shameless, many don’t know just how long she has been honing her craft. Emmy has been in performing arts schools and acting programs since a young age. She got her start in the entertainment world with singing, having started singing at the age of 7. And being a New Yorker, her talents eventually landed her on Law and Order. She had her first gig on the popular series in 1997. And although she was training mostly for classical singing, once she started acting, Emmy never really looked back. And the level of stardom and income she was earning was a dream come true for her and her family.

Emmy grew up with her single mom and was raised by her alone. She never had her father in the picture, but she received much support and encouragement from her mother while pursuing her singing, and later acting, dreams from a young age. So when she landed her gig with Law and Order, and then later a huge spot on the Practice, it was a major deal. For her guest appearance on The Practice, and for four days of work, the then 15-year-old brought home a paycheck for $12,000. Take about a return on investment for Emmy’s mom!

As her acting opportunities began to flourish, the world was able to see just how talented and versatile Emmy Rossum is as an actor. As a young adult, she landed roles in movies like Songcatcher, Mystic River and the big time film adaptation of the musical The Phantom of the Opera. She also starred in blockbuster film The Day After Tomorrow, and later Beautiful Creatures. All of these roles solidified her as a budding actor who could handle bringing series characters to life.

She went on to star as Fiona in Shameless, which has become one of the biggest roles she is known for today. She has been very open about the similarities in her upbringing and father daughter relationship in comparison to Fiona. She opened up on Facebook in 2017 about not having her father in her life. “Some of these traditions are really hard for those of us who don’t have. Even today, the idea of no father/daughter dance at my wedding. No father to walk me down the aisle. All of these ‘traditions’ are painful reminders that inadvertently re-injure us, causing a feeling of loss, jealously (of others who have what I didn’t), anger and confusion. Usually leading us to feel somehow inadequate.”

As she has grown from this role, she has taken on a new character Angelyne, an upcoming series chronicling the real-life LA celebrity of the same name, who has become a figure of mystery and intrigue. Already, Emma Rossum has immersed herself in the role and flawlessly transformed herself into this picture-perfect character.
