11 Hollywood Celebs Who Used To Be Homeless

Once someone reaches a certain level of fame and fortune we kind of forget about their backstory and think that they’ve always lived like this. We scrutinize over their life as a celebrity, but rarely look back far enough into their life to see if they were born into money and privilege or did they struggle a lot in the beginning. Today, let’s look at famous Hollywood celebs that used to be homeless. Shocking, I know, but doesn’t it make you like them even more? It’s inspiring to see how someone went from being homeless to becoming a world known Hollywood star.



1. Carmen Electra
Who would’ve thought that Carmen Electra, the glamorous model, TV personality, actress, singer and dancer could ever be anything else than what she is now. Turns out at one point Carmen was homeless for years, because her boyfriend at the time stole everything from her. She went from touring with Prince to being homeless with nowhere to go. However, she then managed to get a role on Baywatch and get her life back on track.

2. Daniel Craig
This generation’s favorite James Bond has seen some pretty sad days in his life. Before he became a start that he is now, he had some struggles. While he was still a struggling actor in London he wasn’t a stranger to spending his nights on a park bench in the park, because he couldn’t afford accommodation in London.

3. Jennifer Lopez
It’s hard to believe,but even the fabulous J.Lo has had her share of sleeping on stranger’s couches in her teen years. Much like Halle Berry’s mum, Jennifer Lopez’ parents weren’t over the moon with their daughter’s career choice. So when Jennifer turned 18 and decided to start auditioning to pursue her dream job, she had to couch surf, since she had no money to support herself or pay rent.



4. Jim Carrey
You know how they say life is a tragedy when seen in close-up, but a comedy in the long-shot? Well that quote couldn’t be more true when talking about Jim Carrey. These days he’s a successful comedian, making everyone laugh with his hilarious performances in the Mask, Ice Ventura, Dumb and Dumber and of course the old but awesome Liar Liar. However, at the age of 16 Jim Carrey had to drop out of school to care for his sick mother, and soon after that his whole family had to live out of their car, a little Volkswagen bus.

5. Chris Pratt
Before Chris Pratt became the lovable Andy from Parks and Recreation, and long before he even dreamed of being the star of Guardians of the Galaxy, he used to live in Scooby Doo van in Hawaii. After finishing college he had no idea what to do with his life. He worked as a stripper for a bit, but soon after he decided to buy a one way ticket to Hawaii and became a pot-smoking homeless person living in a van. Makes you wonder if he knew what life had in store for him at the time.

6. David Letterman
We all know and love The Late Show with David Letterman. He’s probably the most well known and loved late night host not only in America, but the whole world. Every celebrity knows that if they managed to book an appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman, that means they’ve made it in showbiz. However, when David first moved to LA, he had to live out of his car, a red Chevy pickup, for quite a while, before he became the famous late night host we admire now.



7. Kelly Clarkson
Now a famous singer, songwriter and a children’s book author, Kelly Clarkson has seen her share of misfortune back in the day. When she first moved to LA she had to live out of her car and occasionally sleep in homeless shelters after her apartment burnt down. She had no money or contacts in LA at the time but she managed to sort out her life in the end, didn’t she?

8. Martin Sheen
Whether you know him as President Bartlet from the West Wing or, more recently, Robert from Netflix’s Grace and Frankie, we can all agree that Martin Sheen is an amazing actor. But long before he became known by his stage name as Martin Sheen, the struggling actor Ramón Antonio Gerardo Estévez used to spend his nights sleeping on the subway in NY.

9. Natasha Lyonne
Much like her heroine Nicky in Orange Is The New Black, Natasha struggled with drug addiction back in the day. In fact she struggled so much that eventually she became homeless and at some point was admitted to a hospital in New York under a fake name, trying to recover from hepatitis C, a collapsed lung, a heart infection and an addiction to heroin.



10. Sylvester Stallone
The famous Rocky had a rocky past before he became a Hollywood hotshot. Back in the day, when Sylvester Stallone was still a struggling actor he’s had to sell his beloved dog for $50 to make ends meet. There was a time when he couldn’t pay rent, so he was evicted from his apartment and had to live in a NYC bus station for three weeks.

11. Shania Twain
A famous singer, a proud owner of 5 Grammy awards, Shania Twain is known all over the world. But back in the day, when she was just a kid, Shania couldn’t even dream of the success she has now. She lived in an abusive household and when her parents got divorced, Shania’s mother had to take the kids and live in a homeless shelter for a while, just to make sure that her children got fed regularly.
