Having your own fashion line isn’t a new development for celebrity kids. In fact, it’s almost a must, we’ve come to expect it. We also see celeb teens working with fashion brands and promoting a certain kind of style. They position themselves as fashion icons and millions of teens around the world try their best to get their look. But how many of them are true fashion icons? How many of them actually have a new vision, or have something new to say?
First let’s think about what does the term “fashion icon” mean and who do we consider to be fashion icons. This question is a bit tricky to answer. There’s no actual definition, but from years of fashion runways and magazine covers we’ve come to understand that a fashion icon is someone that has a style that transcends time, a person whose fashion choices will surprise you, be new and unusual, but also will define that time period.
We’ve come to expect fashion icons to be adults. When we look back on fashion icons of past years we see people like Audrey Hepburn, Karl Lagerfeld, Giorgio Armani, Coco Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent, Louis Vuitton, Vera Wang, Vivienne Westwood, Kate Moss, Twiggy, David Bowie, Madonna. We expect these kinds of people to dictate the rules of fashion . However the times are changing.
Today you don’t have to be a runway model or a designer to influence the fashion world. You don’t have to be a huge pop star or sign up to work for a certain brand. You can just create your own style and share it on social media. These days we tend to check fashion blogs and Instagram more often. All you need is a fresh idea. Once you’ve got that – broadcasting it to the world is easy. You just post it online and wait for the response.
Jaden and Willow Smith have a great idea. They don’t want to conform to the norms set up by society. They want to express themselves in the ways that make them feel comfortable and showcase their true self. Willow Smith often wears things that you would never think of putting together and looks amazing. Jaden goes even further and is trying to break the gender-conforming norms and stereotypes. He can often be seen wearing skirts, t-shirt dresses and crop tops, yet he still looks cool and has his own style. He often comments on his fashion choices in interviews. To Jaden, there’s no such thing as girl clothes or boy clothes. They’re just clothes and their sole purpose is to make you feel comfortable and help you express yourself.
Jaden and Willow Smith, in my opinion, are exactly the kind of teen fashion icons we’ve been waiting for. They’re young and passionate, they have style, they have great ideas, and because of their fame and status, they have ways of implementing those ideas into the real world. Jaden is already launching his own clothing line, appropriately called MSFTS, that he hopes will change the world. Willow, already a successful young actress and singer, has recently signed with her first modeling agency, and I’m sure we can expect more great things from her in the future. Good luck, little Smiths, the world is your oyster!
