If you’ve watched the Handmaid’s Tale you know it’s brilliant. If you haven’t – let me summarize it for you. It’s a Hulu web series created by Bruce Miller and based on a book of the same name, written by Margaret Atwood. And the most I’m willing to say about the plot, without spoiling anything in the show for you, is that it’s set in dystopian future in which women called “Handmaids”, are forced into sexual and child-bearing servitude.
It’s pretty mind blowing if you ask me. It’s also the first web series to win a primetime Emmy for Outstanding Series, and that’s not the only Emmy it won. It was got 13 different Primetime Emmy nomination and won eight! It also got two Golden Globes, for Best Television Series – Drama and for Best Actress. My point is – it’s freaking fantastic and you have to watch it. You have about a month to catch up on the first season, and the second one will premiere at the end of April.
Now that we’re on the same page, let me tell you some interesting fact about the cast of the Handmaid’s Tale.
So everyone knows Elisabeth Moss, or Lizzie, as everyone who knows her calls her, was in Mad Men. Those who are a bit older might also remember her from the West Wing where she played the president’s daughter. But here’s something you might not know about her – Elisabeth Moss is a scientologist. She doesn’t like to talk about it, but she’s been brought up as a scientologist since early childhood and she still remains a member of this slightly strange religion.
Samira Wiley, who we all know from Orange is the new Black, and now from The Handmaid’s Tale too, turns out is also pretty serious about her religion. She mentioned in one of her interviews that she pretty much grew up in church, and her parents are Baptist pastors. But here’s another fun fact, she used to work in a bar, even while she was working on OITNB, but eventually just had to quit that job because too many people started recognizing her.
Alexis Bledel did an amazing job on the Handmaid’s Tale, but the majority of her fans probably know her from her Gilmore Girls days. Did you know that she actually dated her on screen boyfriends Jared Padalecki and Milo Ventimiglia? She also hates coffee, so in most scenes on Gilmore Girls she just had soda in her cup. But here’s a thing a lot of people don’t know about her. She’s actually a Latina girl. A lot of people might think she’s of Irish descent or something, because of how pale she is, but she’s actually Latina, her first language is Spanish and she didn’t even speak English until she went to school.
Max, who you probably know best from The Social Network is actually a super sweet guy in real life. His first celebrity crush at the age of four was Kirstie Elie, when he saw her in Look Who’s Talking. He also finds women to be really interesting in terms of acting and in general. So according to him his Netflix suggestions all looked like “Drama with a Strong Female Lead”, “Comedies With A Strong Female Lead” etc. That’s also what drew him to The Handmaid’s Tale.
Ok when it comes to Joseph we have to start with his name. His full name is Joseph Alberic Twisleton-Wykeham-Fiennes. Quite a mouthful, don’t you think ? Also if he reminds you of Voldemort a little bit – it’s probably because they’re related. His brother Ralph played “he who shall not be named” in the Harry Potter franchise. In fact he comes from a pretty talented family. He has 5 siblings and most of them are into the arts too.
Yvonne is originally from Australia. She’s fluent not only in Aussie-English but in Polish. She had her rebellious phase during which she had a nose ring for 5 years, thank God that’s over, right? She was a dancer from age 5 and she hasn’t eaten any sugar for a year and a half. Oh, and you know how all actresses always wear heels to red carpets and all sorts of events? Well, Yvonne didn’t know how to walk in heels a mere 4 years ago, but now she’s a total pro.
