Unless you live in a warm country, winter can be a very difficult time for you. You might love cold and snowy weather or prefer the warm summer days, however, you need to be prepared for this season. While nature takes a rest, you need to stay alive and meet the everyday challenges of life. Here are 6 simple tips to boost your immune system and keep you healthy this winter!

1. Wrap up
It might be a very obvious tip to follow but many people forget that weather can vary during the day. If it looks sunny and warm in the morning, however it might be snowing in the evening. You can’t prepare for all situations but having a scarf or pair of gloves in your bag can be enough to stay warm. You shouldn’t underestimate layers as part of your everyday fashion choices. If you are moving around a lot, warm and comfortable boots will keep you going as being cold is one of the main causes of getting sick!

2. Vitamin C to the rescue
Health supplements can prepare our immune system for any incoming danger. In summer we receive most of the vitamins and minerals from fresh fruits and vegetables. Our winter diet changes slightly as fresh foods are not locally grown and might not contain necessary macro and micro elements to support our health. It is still recommended that you consume as many fruits and veggies as you can especially those rich in vitamin C. If this is not enough, top up with vitamin supplements from your local pharmacy or vitamin store.

3. Drink water
Our bodies require less water in winter due to changes in body functions (we sweat less), but don’t be tricked by your body. You still require water to support your immune system as it helps to clean toxins and provide hydration for your cells. As a rule, you should drink around 2 liters of water (adjust accordingly for your body weight). Add a slice of lemon and you will get a vitamin C boost.

4. Exercise
Exercising is a great way to keep your body healthy and fit. You will get the benefit of a stronger and healthier body at the same time. Winter sports like skiing and skating might make you enjoy winter even more. Long walks through a winter forest could be a great help for your immune system. Make sure you put some warm clothes on though. If you are not ready for such commitment, doing light exercises every morning will be a great start to improving your health.

5. Get some sun
Vitamin D not only makes you happier, it also helps your immune system. The easiest way to get it is to get out to get some sun. Even 20 minutes outside can give you a charge of happy hormones. Milk and fish liver oil is another source of vitamin D, nevertheless, you will need to take those quite regularly to get a real benefit.

6. Don’t forget about sleep
With the change of clocks and natural shortening of the days, your sleep cycle might suffer. You might have noticed that it is way harder to wake up during winter when it is still dark outside. Setting your alarm 10 minutes earlier and snoozing with a light on till your normal wake up time will make it easier to begin your day. Relaxation before bed is also very important as stress has a negative effect on your immune system. Take time to enjoy your life and be happy no matter where you are!
