Whatever Happened to Little Ricky From I Love Lucy?

Watching I Love Lucy today can make you forget just how old that show is. You experience Lucy’s little schemes as Ricky tries to keep up with her, but then you remember the show premiered 75 years ago, and suddenly you feel like time itself is just a man-made concept.

Keith Thibodeaux (aka Richard Keith), best known as Little Ricky, turns 76 this year. These days, he’s already rocking that white hair, has a grandson, and his fame as a drumming prodigy has kept him busy throughout the decades.

Not many of you will remember him as a literal rugrat sitting behind a miniature drum kit, but guess what? He’s still playing.

The Drums Came Before the Sitcom

Little Ricky’s musical ability was a match made in TV heaven, as he’d be joining a household headed by bandleader Ricky Ricardo. Thibodeaux already had the skills when he auditioned for the role.

Born in Lafayette, Louisiana, he began playing drums at two. By four, while most kids were eating sand and Play-Doh, he was rocking with the Horace Heidt Orchestra, traveling across the United States and Canada. His musical background eventually brought him to the attention of the people behind I Love Lucy.

At the audition, Thibodeaux showed off his crazy drum skills. Then Desi Arnaz joined him for a jam, and the little guy instantly landed the job. It’s hard to imagine a more useful audition partner for a child hoping to play Ricky Ricardo’s son.

Viewers would come to know him as Little Ricky, while Richard Keith became his stage name. Thibodeaux was a bit of a mouthful for Hollywood.

Little Ricky Arrived Several Years Into the Show

I Love Lucy premiered in 1951 on CBS, and the original setup revolved around Lucy and Ricky’s marriage, with their neighbors regularly getting pulled into their shenanigans.

The parenthood arc came during the second season. That’s how Ball’s real-life pregnancy became part of the story, and Little Ricky was born in “Lucy Goes to the Hospital.” Ball also gave birth to her real-life son, Desi Arnaz Jr., that day. That timing has probably confused a lot of viewers over the years.

Several children played the younger Little Ricky before Thibodeaux took over in 1956, during the sixth season. By then, the character was old enough to speak and have stories of his own. Thibodeaux’s drumming gave the writers something especially useful to work with.

Growing Up Meant Wanting Some Distance

Being associated with a show everyone knows and loves sounds like a great problem to have, but growing up in that environment might have felt a bit stressful for a young performer.

Thibodeaux eventually wanted people to see him as his own person, not just the Little Ricky character. In 2025, he admitted that being identified with his childhood role didn’t sit well with him. That’s understandable because when you’re younger, you don’t really think about being on a TV show as work. But when you’re older, you discover that there’s nothing wrong with people loving a character who’s near and dear to them.

He continued acting, including appearances on The Andy Griffith Show, but music became a major part of his life. In the late 1960s, he joined David and the Giants. His rock-band years were quite wild too, with all the money, drugs, and a lifestyle worthy of a rebel.

His Music Career Is Still Going

Thibodeaux’s close connection with David and the Giants continued throughout his life. After he and the other members became Christians, the group decided to rebrand itself as a Christian band. He toured extensively and recorded with them before leaving in 1989, but later returned for more gigs.

He also built a working partnership with his wife, ballet dancer Kathy Thibodeaux. The couple married in 1976, and Kathy founded Ballet Magnificat! in 1986. Keith joined the organization in 1991 and became an executive director in 1993. The good thing was that his responsibilities still left some room for drumming and recording.

Family life didn’t stop with just the married couple, though. In 1979, Keith and Kathy had a daughter, Tara, and recently, Thibodeaux spoke warmly about his grandson.

So yes, Little Ricky is now a grandpa. That may take a while to sink in if you’re a fan. And even if you’re not, just know that the drum kid from that one old show has had a whole life since then, with plenty of music along the way.
