Being a teenage girl can be a rollercoaster of an experience – and what better way to go through all those highs and lows than with relatable TV characters who are going through it all, but much more dramatic? Here are the top dramas that teenage girls need to watch.
1. Pretty Little Liars
What’s better than an invincible and cute girl gang? One that solves mysteries better than the FBI, obviously. Pretty Little Liars is about 4 teens who attempt to uncover the mysterious and sinister “A” who killed off their BFF, but that’s just the beginning of the blackmail, murder, and the rest of the drama.
2. Gilmore Girls
There’s nothing quite as cathartic as sitting down with a pint of ice cream and the fast talking, quirky Gilmore girls. The show might be a few years old, but it’s a timeless classic that all mothers and daughters can relate to as time goes on.
3. Gossip Girl
Blair and Serena were all of our friendship goals – they got into fights, then spent thousands of their parents dollars on Fendi bags and Gucci outfits to make themselves feel better. This show was as much about the fashion as it was the drama – runway outfits, arguments over hot boys and cutting dialogue? This was a pioneer of the edgy teen drama world.
4. The Vampire Diaries
We don’t know what it is about vampires that makes girls go weak in the knees – it must be that irresistible combination of him being a bad boy, but also not being a human man at all, since those tend to have their faults. Nina Dobrev and her smoldering baes were quite the competition for Edward and Bella.
5. 13 Reasons Why
This show covers some darker teen issues like depression , suicide, and sexual assault. It explores the topics through a series of tapes left by a teen who committed suicide. It helps teens understand the importance of consent and mental health which is extremely important In the #metoo era.
Riverdale brings to life our beloved Archie comics in the form of a surreal, fantasy injected series with some swoon worthy make protagonists.
This is like the series version of Thirteen, but on steroid. Definitely the show that you’re obsessed with binging, but you’d never want your mom to know you watched it. Some might find it too hardcore for a high school audience, but it tackles many of the real issues that teens face today along with a realistic portrayal of how they use technology.
8. Chilling Adventures of Sabrina
Doesn’t every teenage girl feel like half witch at some point in her life? Chilling adventures of Sabrina is a supernatural series that blends the grotesque with fabulous outfits and some classic teen drama. Protagonist Kiernan Shipka truly shines post Mad Men.
Atytpical is your typical family drama – except it centers around an autistic 18 year old named Sam. Sam is out there looking for independence through his autism, and also a girlfriend. The show encourages compassionate inclusivity and educates us on autism while making us laugh.
Skins was one of the first edgy series post-Degrassi, written for teens by teens. It covered lots of controversial waters, to the beat of a very lit soundtrack. Plus, it all takes place in the UK, where teens essentially have free roam over wherever they want. A US remake was attempted, but the UK series is way better.
