Despite being married for over 30 years to his beloved wife Michelle, the internet is ablaze with gossip that this power couple might be splitting up. The speculation occurred after they’d been attending high-profile events solo. Barack attended former POTUS Jimmy Carter’s funeral without Michelle on January 9th.
Advisers told CNN that the reason was because of a scheduling conflict and Michelle remained on holiday in Hawaii. But perhaps she’s really taking solace in a tropical getaway to get some space and time alone.
The news also follows the strange rumors that Barack has been romantically involved with actress Jennifer Aniston. Should we be taking this info seriously, or is it all just hearsay?
Just days following Jimmy Carter’s funeral, the Obamas released an official statement sharing that Michelle would also be away for yet another major upcoming event: the 2025 inauguration of Donald Trump. While this is a surprising break from tradition, it’s not surprising that Michelle would opt to sit this one out, given her opinions on the Trump administration.
In November 2024, she called Trump a “predator found liable for sexual abuse” and “a convicted felon, a known slumlord” at a Kamala Harris campaign rally. While she did attend Trump’s 2020 inauguration for his first term, she later admitted on her podcast, three years later, how unpleasant the experience was, admitting that she cried for half an hour after the ceremony.
Michelle spoke about how uncomfortable she felt “to sit on that stage and watch the opposite of what we represented on display—there was no diversity, there was no color on that stage, there was no reflection of the broader sense of America.”
But even when Trump is removed from the equation, journalists and experts hear whispers close to the source and wonder if there are also some internal issues between the couple that have led to these absences.
Tara Palmeri, Puck News’s senior political correspondent, and blogger Meghan McCain were on a podcast. McCain said she had heard the rumors from “very serious journalists,” and Palmeri added that she heard the couples were living separate lives. McCain, who is also Republican senator John McCain’s daughter, wasn’t willing to name these highly regarded journalists.
On January 17th, Barack posted a loving birthday dedication to his wife on Instagram, with the caption, “Happy birthday to the love of my life, @MichelleObama. You fill every room with warmth, wisdom, humor, and grace—and you look good doing it. I’m so lucky to be able to take on life’s adventures with you. Love you!”
