Ever since the premiere of Sex and the City back in 1999, TV producers have been trying to recreate the idea of an iconic girl gang. From Girls to Broad City this sex-positive, fashionista series launched a revolution in the portrayal of female friendships on TV. We were all depressed after the sixth and final season ended, and the movies just didn’t do these gals justice. So naturally, we all freaked out when it was announced that the girls would be together once again for a new SATC reunion. Not an episode — an entirely new series.
They tried to do a kind of prequel to Carrie’s life in the city with 2013 prequel The Carrie Diaries, but it ended up being a flop and more catered to teen audiences. Luckily, this nostalgic for the late 90s/early 2000s show will get to see their favorite actresses back together on the silver screen again.

According to the New York Post, HBO Max will be broadcasting the limited series with Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon, and Kristen Davis all making a return as Carrie, Miranda, and Charlotte. Unfortunately, Kim Cattrall will not be returning as Samantha. If you don’t already know, Cattrall had some serious beef with the rest of the cast members and was a notorious drama queen that the crew didn’t exactly enjoy working with.
Still, in 2017 interview with Piers Morgan, Kim said that she played the role of Samantha “past the finish line and then some” but that another actress should take on the role and bring some more diversity to it — perhaps Black or Hispanic Samantha Jones. Though that was mighty inclusive for her to say, we have a feeling it was just a solid excuse for not addressing the cattiness backstage that her other co-stars can attest to.
Most famously Sarah Jessica Parker and Kim Cattrall have had public feuds. After Kim’s brother passed in 2018 and Sarah posted her condolences, Cattrall responded with this savage comment, wondering about the history that really went down between these two: “Your continuous reaching out is a painful reminder of how cruel you really were then and now. Let me make this VERY clear. (If I haven’t already) You are not my family. You are not my friend.”
SJP herself called the show not a reboot, but a “revisit” and while we’re not sure what that means exactly, we’re still excited about it. The series will consist of 10 thirty-minute episodes and is set to start filming in late spring 2021. While there has been a trailer released, it only shows shots of NYC itself — none of the cast.
Sex and the City had a huge cultural impact on everything from fashion to how we view modern relationships and independent women. It showed empowered women on screen openly discussing their sex and love lives with explicit details that actually catered to our views as women, not some female fantasy conjured up by men. We’re on the edge of our seats waiting to see what revisiting these storylines means for Carrie and Big’s ongoing and very controversial relationship.
We also can’t wait to see what fashion designers will have their creations strutted on the new SATC. We all remember that iconic tutu from the intro, and all of Carrie’s swoon-worthy shoes.
Apparently, other elements of the show will stay the same, such as their drank and straightforward manner regarding certain topics, gorgeous shots of New York City, and the glitzy glam we all love to tune in for. So far, the rest still seems a mystery, and we can’t wait for the premiere.
