It’s no surprise that the daughter of Barack and Michelle Obama is smart, talented and ambitious. But beyond her parents’ name, Malia Obama is carving out her own career and path for herself in the entertainment industry. At the young age of 23, it’s been reported that she was co-writing a show with Donald Glover. Dubbed “Hive,” Donald himself speaks highly of Malia, praising her work ethic and natural talent with her writing style. He called her “an amazingly talented person” in an interview with “Vanity Fair” in March 2022. This isn’t Malia’s first rodeo — she interned on several famous shows including Lena Dunham’s popular HBO show “Girls.” Dunham even described her as an “angel” on a talk show. She also worked with Halle Berry as a production assistant on the television drama “Extant.”
Even though she was a president’s daughter at the time of interning, her humble and grounded attitude is what kept her in the heart of many on set. Although nobody was asking Michele and Barack’s firstborn to fetch them coffee, she was apparently up for whatever errands needed to be done.
Glover’s new and mysterious show is part of the eight-figure deal he signed with Amazon after exiting an arrangement with FX. It is apparently inspired by Beyonce and is about a “Beyonce-like figure.” Given his work on “Atlanta” we can’t wait to see what this team brings to the table with the show. The deal was signed with Amazon Studios in February 2021 and is a collaboration with playwright Janine Nabers, who has worked on “Watchmen” and “Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce.”
Recently, Malia graduated from Harvard University. In her final year at the college, she learned remotely due to the COVID-19 pandemic. At this time she was at her family home at Washington and their cottage in Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts. For some time, her boyfriend Rory Farquharson stayed with the family as well. Fortunately, Barack and Rory get along well. In fact, the former POTUS had nothing but kind words to say about him when appearing on “The Bill Simmons Podcast.” He said, “He’s British, wonderful young man, and he was sort of stuck because there was a whole visa thing, and he had a job set up,” Barack explained, adding that he stayed with their family “for a while”. Barack also joked about how much food it took to feed their daughter’s boyfriend, commenting that his grocery bill “went up about 30%.”
There’s still not a ton known about Malia, even though she spent nearly a decade at one of the most famous houses in America. While we know some facts about her (her birthday is on the 4th of July and outfits she’s worn have sold out in minutes) but still, she’s managed to keep a pretty low profile for being the daughter of Michele and Barack Obama. This has allowed her to grow up at her own pace rather than being bombarded by paparazzi every minute of every day. And hence, she’s landed a real job at a TV gig rather than becoming a problematic reality star. We can’t wait to see those writing shops — especially with major players like Dunham and Glover singing her praises.
When you add the fact that an Ivy League grad who’s in a long-term relationship with a guy that her dad likes, Malia is a seriously great role model for other young women. She also knows how to drive, which adds to her independence — but her dad didn’t teach her. Luckily, the Secret Service was there to step in and help steer her journey towards getting a license. Their nickname for her was actually “Radiance” which speaks to her elegance and grace. Malia Obama has always wanted to work in the film industry and even her college degree was in Visual studies.
Although some gossip swirled around her after being filmed at a music festival, she was really just being a normal college student, and never let the haters get to her. Instead, she stayed focused, worked hard, and look where it got her today! Sadly, recent news seems to reflect that the young writer is no longer with Rory. Instead, she’s been seen hanging out with music producer Dawit Eklund, who is nine years her senior. Regardless of whom she’s dating, we can’t wait to see the new show when it finally premieres and all the exciting things that Malia has in her future.
