No one can beat Princess Diana’s revenge dress, but Meghan Markle can certainly try it in her own way. She has spent years navigating the minefield that is the royal family’s dress code, trying to follow various rules and fulfil expectations placed on her, only to be scrutinised in the press and criticised left and right. So it feels only fair that she should have her own version of a revenge dress, or a few. Meghan knows how to look fabulous and appear completely unbothered no matter what, so let’s take a look at some of the best examples of her doing that.
1. The Scarlet Safiyaa Gown That Commanded Attention
Choosing to leave royal life behind is a bold move, and Meghan managed to make it look very glamorous. The Mountbatten Festival of Music in March 2020 was one of her final engagements as a working royal and she chose a perfect dress for it. The red Safiyaa gown with a cape and matching red heels and a clutch made her look especially striking, and it matched her husband’s military uniform, making them look perfectly coordinated. At this point in time the announcement about Meghan and Harry choosing to step away from royal duties had already been made and it made waves in the media, attracting a lot of attention. She could’ve chosen something more conservative and discreet but Meghan sure knows how to go out with a bang.

Meghan attended the Ripple of Hope Awards in December 2022, just before the much-discussed documentary Harry & Meghan came out on Netflix. The public’s curiosity about the couple was at an all-time high at this point. Meghan chose this gorgeous ivory Louis Vuitton dress to wear to the event. The silhouette of this dress was later compared to that of Diana’s revenge dress, but more modern and minimalist. Meghan also wore an aquamarine ring that belonged to the late Princess Diana, which only strengthened the comparison.

Lots of celebrities only wear a dress once, that seems to be the rule on the red carpets. But not Meghan, she knows that certain dresses are worthy of being reworn. And that’s definitely the case with her red Carolina Herrera Gown, which she first wore to a veteran’s charity event in 2021 and then rewore it to the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles Gala in October 2024. The second time around she also removed the dramatic overskirt from the dress, giving it a cleaner, more chic silhouette. Who knew that repeating an outfit could generate even more attention.

The Paley Honors Fall Gala in December 2024 was an evening dedicated to celebrating the filmmaker Tyler Perry. It was a very special event for Meghan and Harry, since Tyler is a close friend of theirs and he was the one who provided the couple with a place to live when they first were transitioning to life in California. He also later become godfather to their daughter, Princess Lilibet. Meghan wore a gorgeous black Oscar de la Renta gown for the event and paired it with a diamond necklace. The look was classic Hollywood glamour, but to Meghan it was also meaningful, it was a way to celebrate and show appreciation to a loyal friend.

Prince Harry was selected for the Pat Tillman Award for Service at the 2024 ESPY Awards and that drew a lot of criticism. At the time Harry was seen as a highly controversial figure in the media due to his decision to step away from his royal duties, and even Pat Tillman’s mother was shocked that he was the one who got this award. Harry was quite an unusual choice for this award since it was usually all about the unsung heroes and veterans wounded in battle, and it was unheard of for high-profile royalty to receive it. Nevertheless, Meghan was at his side at this event looking polished and understated in her perfectly tailored white halter dress. There was very little embellishment, yet she looked stunning and radiated nothing but loyal support for her husband.

View 39 photos6. The Cult Gaia Dress That Broke Away From Royal Formality
Meghan has become known for her wardrobe of perfectly tailored separates and elegant dresses in neutral shades. But she likes being unpredictable and playful sometimes, and that’s exactly what we think her choice was at the 2023 Invictus Games closing ceremony. Her blue-green Cult Gaia dress with delicate floral cutouts and sheer elements was both unexpected and daring. The dress was definitely an unusual departure from her structured “working royal” style, but we loved the daring silhouette and the pop of colour. It just proved that even as a royal Meghan found ways to evolve her style.

Why wouldn’t you wear gold if you’re being celebrated for your achievements? Especially when those achievements are your advocacy for women and girls at the Ms. Foundation Women of Vision Awards in May 2023. Meghan wore a strapless gold Johanna Ortiz dress with a metallic finish and a keyhole cutout that added a bit of modern edge to the overall look. She paired the dress with Tom Ford heels in bronze and a matching clutch. Now that’s a way to shine at a feminist event.

While we’re sure that the bright blue Victoria Beckham dress must be very nice to begin with, it looked especially stunning on Meghan on the night of the Endeavour Fund Awards in March 2020. It was a rainy evening and it’s as if Meghan knew that a pop of colour and a simple silhouette were all that was needed. The photos from this event look truly cinematic, with Meghan and Harry under the umbrella, raindrops sparkling around them, creating the most magical atmosphere.

Meghan made a very good choice when she wore that black Givenchy dress to the 2018 Fashion Awards in London. It’s not the usual choice for maternity wear when it comes to royals, but she must’ve known that she looked astonishing. The dramatic one-shoulder neckline, the sleek up-do, the gold accessories, the fitted silhouette that highlighted her baby bump, it all just worked out perfectly. Meghan was there to present the Womenswear Designer of the Year award to Clare Waight Keller, the woman who designed her wedding dress. It was a very sweet and meaningful reunion and Meghan looked like a million bucks.

So we’ve mentioned that Meghan has been known to wear a lot of neutrals. Some might call that boring or safe, but not every outfit needs to be dramatic to look good. Meghan wore a beautiful beige Proenza Schouler dress to the Variety’s Power of Women event in November 2023. It was a floor-length gown with an asymmetrical off-the-shoulder neckline. Meghan paired it with understated gold jewellery, black accessories, and a slicked-back hairstyle. It was an event that celebrated influential women in entertainment and Meghan demonstrated quiet luxury at its finest.
