Recently, you might have seen viral pictures going around about a teenage girl in the UN. But she’s not any ordinary girl. Greta Thunberg is a 16-year-old Swedish climate activist spreading awareness on global warming, and the imperative need to reverse it, which our world leaders are oddly on the fence about.
She might have Asperger’s but she’s a defiant, rebellious, patriarchy smashing queen that we are absolutely obsessed with. Thunberg arrived to the UN on a carbon fiber yacht as a statement of how we can reduce our carbon footprint while traveling.
Old white dudes in government around the world have been commenting on her appearance, and we wouldn’t expect any less. Luckily, Ms. Thunberg stares her critics straight in the eyes and address them so say it to her face. She refuses to be objectified, and speaks her stances like a warrior.
A former Top Gear producer told her to “be a good girl” and “shut up.” Handmaidens Tale, anyone? Although it is slightly disappointing that we need a teenager to explain global warming to adult men, it’s wildly impressive that this teen is the face of global climate change, and has led the charge in demanding climate change in over 160 countries.
Her future has been threatened by the actions of our past, and she’s had enough. She started “Fridays For Future”, which encourages students to skip school on Friday as a form of climate strike for their government. Greta was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize back in March, which is wholeheartedly deserved.
Thunberg has led the charge in young people fighting personality for climate change, which should be our worlds’ biggest priority right now.
She’s also usually the most mature person in a room of grown men in the United Nations. Donald Trump, watch out – you’re up next! We hope more members of Generation X take a hint from this fiery gal. Right now, she’s traveling towards North America and heading for Santiago, protesting every Friday no matter where she is.
Greta, it must take a lot of patience to put up with what you do, but we’re eternally grateful for your hard work and perseverance.
