Did you know that having dead skin cells on your lips can actually change your lip color, which in turn can make your lips look dull and lifeless and make your favourite lipstick look not as good? Lip scrubs are the easiest way to keep your lips looking soft and lush and to make sure your favourite lipstick or lipgloss glides on smoothly and shows up as the true color. And the good news is – you don’t have to spend crazy amounts of money on lip scrubs. The majority of them use sugar as the main ingredient, so you can easily whip it up at home and customize it to your preferred color, scent and texture using things you already have in your cupboard. Here are just a few easy DIY lip scrubs that you can easily make at home.

1. Cinnamon Lip Scrub

This is a great idea for those of you who love spiced things and can’t wait for autumn. Cinnamon spice late but in a lip scrub. All you need is two tablespoons of brown sugar, half a tablespoon of olive oil and half a tablespoon of honey – your base lip scrub is done. Now add cinnamon, about a teaspoon should be more than enough. This scrub is both exfoliation and invigorating, you might find that your lips will be a bit tingly and more voluminous after this.

2. Rose Lip Scrub

If you like things that smell like roses and want rosy lips, why not make yourself a rose lips scrub. All you need is granulated sugar and coconut oil, in proportions 2 to 1, some dried rose petals and a few drops of rose essential oils. Just mix it together and pack into a small mason jar or a lip scrub container. Store in the fridge for up to a week.

3. Strawberry Lip Scrub

It’s strawberry season and it’s a great time to make a strawberry lip scrub. Not only will it smell and taste delicious, it’ll actually be extra exfoliating because of strawberry juice and little strawberry seeds. All you need is 1 strawberry, a tablespoon of sugar, and half a tablespoon of coconut oil. Mash it all together and store in the fridge. It’s best to make a small batch and use it up in a couple of days and then just make a new one than make a big batch and risk it going bad.

4. Cotton Candy Lip Scrub

If you like that cotton candy summer vibe you might like the idea of making this lip scrub. It’s actually super easy. You just mix 1 tablespoon of coconut oil with 2 tablespoons of granulated white sugar (you need specifically white granulated because you want the color to show up) and add a couple of drops of cotton candy flavouring. Divide into two bowls, add a drop of pink food coloring to one and a drop of blue to the other. Now all you’ve got left is packing it into a pretty clear lip scrub container to show off the color.

5. Mojito Lip Scrub

While we can’t have Mojitos at the bar with our friends every day, because of obvious reasons, it doesn’t mean we can’t make a mojito lip scrub and pretend we’re having a mojito while also taking care of our lips. Just mix together white granulated sugar and coconut oil until it forms a thick paste, add some freshly squeezed lime juice and a few mint leaves cut into little pieces.

6. Nourishing Lip Scrub

This is the easiest yet the most nourishing lip scrub you’ll ever make. All you need is honey and sugar. It’s best to use cane sugar since it’s softer and organic honey for all the vitamins. Just mix the two ingredients to form a grainy paste. The sugar will exfoliate, while honey will moisturize your lips. You can also add a few drops of nourishment. This should store absolutely fine at room temperature in a dark place, since honey has antibacterial and preservative qualities, but putting it in a fridge will give you that cooling refreshing feeling every time you go to use it.
