There is nothing more special than a good dad. It is of course essential that mothers raise their children, but it is equally important to have a good father. When men step up to the plate and have an active and engaged role in their children’s lives, it can truly make a world of difference to the progress and happiness of that child. Without a dad, there are many ways that kids can have inconsistencies and voids in their development and sense of self-worth. This is why having a father, or father figure, in one’s life is such a source of joy and pride. Fatherhood can come in all shapes and sizes, but the most important thing is that fathers make an attempt to fit themselves consistently into their kid’s daily lives. Fathers can be the breadwinner, the confidante, the protector, the compassionate one, or the caregiver. What we have seen in recent decades is an increase in fathers breaking gender roles and becoming the primary caregivers for their children. And according to online sources, 85 percent of fathers say that being a dad is one of the best jobs ever, and 90 percent say that being a dad is their greatest joy. To learn about some of the best fathers ever, check out this list of 6 truly inspirational dads from throughout history.

President Obama once said in an open letter to his daughters, “When I was a young man, I thought life was all about me. But then the two of you came into my world with all your curiosity and mischief and those smiles that never fail to fill my heart and light up my day. And suddenly, all my big plans for myself didn’t seem so important anymore. I soon found that the greatest joy in my life was the joy I saw in yours.”
